Mission
Bridges to the STARS is a bridge program offering support and scholarship assistance for women and minority students interested in science, math or technology based programs. The program addresses students' academic and personal development needs while sparking their interest and enthusiasm in scientific and technological fields. The goals of the program are: to recruit women and minority students, to assist them in developing foundation academic skills, to provide role models, to enhance access to career exploration and tutoring, to promote peer support and to familiarize students with the wide variety of jobs available in science, mathematics and emerging technologies.

News About The Bridges to the STARS Program
Bridges to the STARS is:
* A program for first-year college students to explore degrees based in mathematics, science or technology * A supportive environment with other students interested in similar degrees * Academic, career and personal growth counseling * An opportunity for extensive career exploration * A comprehensive learning experience * A foundation for a technical degree or transfer into a 4 year college
To apply for the Scholarship Program you must be:
* A woman or a minority student in the first year of college * A first generation college student or a student with financial need * A MA resident and U.S. citizen, permanent resident or eligible non-citizen
To apply for the Scholarship Program you must submit:
* A GED or High School Diploma * An application for admissions to NSCC * A Financial Aid Application at NSCC (even if not eligible for aid) * An application for the Bridges to the STARS Program * A recommendation from a math or science teacher is recommended .....(or employer if out of school for a few years)
During the Fall semester, students take:
* SSC101 - College Success Seminar - This is where all the STARS get to know each other and learn the skills and attitudes that it takes to be a successful student and future tech worker. * CMP101 - Composition 1 OR COM012/014 College Reading 2 and College Writing 2 * A Math or Science course appropriate to the student's placement * Elective courses chosen by the student to best complement their career goals
During the Spring semester, students take:
* SCI901 - Technical Awareness and Career Exploration and continue in appropriate courses for each person's career goals

Excellence Through Diversity Program New England Science Symposium
The Harvard Medical School Minority Faculty Development Program and the Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) will hold the seventh annual New England Science Symposium on Sunday, April 6, 2008. (I think this is from 5 - 9 PM)
There is no registration fee for these programs however, pre-registration is required. Students must download and fill out the registration form found at www.mfdp.med.harvard.edu/med_grad/ness and fax it to: 617.432.3834 or mail it to: Biomedical Science Careers Program, c/o Harvard Medical School, 164 Longwood Avenue, 2nd floor, Boston, MA, 02115.
Students interested in this workshop, may come to the Student Support Center (LW121) to discuss the program with me (Nancy Tufo) or Ray Parker.

The Fall Science Network will be held all day on
A Saturday in November
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Last year NSCC students accompanied by Ray Parker, Academic Counselor and Advisor to the Pre-Med students attended the event. They were excited by the contacts they made and the information that they were given. The Science Network links professionals with over 400 students of color at the high school, college and graduate school levels to inspire and encourage them toward a successful and rewarding career in science, technology, mathematics or engineering. Community College Day 2008 at UMASS Amherst College of Engineering March 6, 2008 Mary Beth Steigerwald accompnied this year's trip to Amherst with students from the Engineering Club and Bridges. Marine Biology Experience Cruise
The Marine Biology Experience Cruise is scheduled for Friday, April 22 at 12:20 PM. The time may change a bit, but weather permitting that will be the day.
Also, if you are interested, their will be a whale watch out of Gloucester on Sunday May 1st at 1:15 PM. Scott Stimpson will need to conform that date and time.

This year MBC has added a career fair to our Annual Meeting & Trade Exposition. The Career Fair is open to the public and free of charge. Local biotechnology and industry related companies will have the opportunity to highlight their job openings to interested participants. This event took place from 10:00am to 4:00pm on a Thursday in April in the Republic Ballroom at the Sheraton Boston Hotel.

NSCC Scholarships
Applications available in February and due in March
All students with good academic records may apply for the NSCC Foundation Scholarships each year that you are returning to NSCC. These applications are available each spring for the following fall semester.
Graduates may apply for the NSCC Alumni Scholarships at the same time. Don't forget to apply for the alumni scholarship each year you attend the 4 year college or university.
