How does e-Learning work?
Instruction for e-Learning courses is delivered through media (videotapes,
DVDs, or audiotapes) or the Internet, and you communicate with your instructor
and classmates by phone or online. Several courses have online discussion boards
for enhanced interaction. Because there are no regularly scheduled classes,
you complete course assignments and requirements at home.
Audiocourses (AV)
Audiocourses use a series of audiocassettes (purchased at the Bookstore), a
study guide, and textbook(s). Instead of regularly scheduled classes, you work
independently to complete course requirements. Contact with the instructor is
by telephone, email, or U.S. mail. Some of these courses are offered as six-week
Fast Track courses.
CAT (Classroom and Technology—Hybrid) Courses (CT)
A CAT (hybrid) course combines face-to-face classroom learning with computer-based
learning. In a CAT course, the time spent in a classroom is reduced and you
do more work independently online. For example, in a Tuesday/Thursday course,
you may meet with your instructor and classmates on campus only on Tuesdays
and do the remaining work on your own from home, using your computer and the
Internet.
Fast-Track Courses (FT)
Fast-track courses are condensed into six-weeks. Instead of regularly scheduled
courses, you complete course requirements independently. Most fast-track courses
use audiocassettes.
Online (OL)
Course content, requirements, assignments, and discussions are online. You
need Internet access, Windows 98 or later version, and Microsoft Word. Certain
courses may have other software and hardware requirements.
Telecourses (TV)
Telecourses use videotapes or DVDs, plus a study guide, and textbook(s). Instead
of regularly scheduled classes, you work independently to complete course requirements.
Contact with the instructor is by telephone, email, or U.S. mail. These courses
include 10 to 13 hours of video programs. You can check out a DVD of all the
programs from the front desk of the Lynn or Danvers Library for the semester. You can check out
individual videotapes overnight or view them on campus. Or you can rent a set
of videotapes for the semester (approximately $50.00)
Videoconference Courses (VC)
Videoconference courses are "real-time" courses that permit students
and faculty to interact through closed-circuit television. You, your classmates,
and instructor may be located at different campuses. Attendance is required
in scheduled class meetings.
